Strainers - An Overview

A strainer is a device used to mechanically remove solids from flowing fluid by utilizing a perforated plate or mesh.  Strainers are installed upstream of pumps, compressors, steam traps, spray nozzles,heat exchangers, condensers and steam inlet to turbines to protect these equipments from detrimental effects of sediment, rust, pipe scale or other debirs.

Following are the commonly used types of Strainers :

  • Y-strainers
  • T-strainers
  • Basket strainers
  • Duplex or Twin strainers
  • Conical strainers
  • Plate strainers
