Slip type expansion joints PDF Print E-mail

Slip type expansion joints are sometimes referred to as barrel type expansion joints. They are used to absorb large axial displacements where use of expansion loops is prohibited or not possible due to layout constraints. Slip type expansion joints are frequently used in cross country water pipelines.

Slip-type expansion joints are made by "telescoping" one pipe within another and sealing them together with packing, which will take the temperature and pressure while allowing large movement in the axial direction. They can be supplied with flanged or welded ends and with or without anchor base.

Types

Slip joints can be of two types:

  • Single slip expansion joints. These are used as main anchors.
  • Double slip expansion joints. These are used as intermediate anchors.
