Piping Wall Thickness Calculator — Pressure Design per Para 304.1.2

Project Information (optional — all fields)
Material Selection

Allowable stress is automatically interpolated from the ASME B31.3 (2024) Table A-1C database using the selected material and design temperature. The interpolated value is shown in the output summary below.

Pipe Range Selection

Use Range 2 when different construction types apply to different size ranges — e.g. Seamless up to 10" and Welded from 12" onwards. The weld joint quality factor (E) is 1.0 for seamless construction.

1.  Pipe wall thickness calculations are as per ASME B31.3 (2024 edition).

2.  Allowable stress S is linearly interpolated from the material's stress-vs-temperature table per ASME B31.3 Table A-1C.

3.  Column (t < D/6?)  — this calculation is valid for t < D/6. Yes means the thin-wall formula applies. No means t ≥ D/6 — the thick-wall formula must be used; special considerations apply.

4.  t  is the pressure design thickness per Eq. (3a), Para 304.1.2:  t = PD / [2(SEW + PY)]

5.  tm  is the minimum required pipe wall thickness per Eq. (2), Para 304.1.1:  tm = t + c

6.  The selected thickness must satisfy: tselected × (1 − mill tolerance) ≥ tm

7.  MAWP = 2SEW(tsm − c) / [D − 2Y(tsm − c)]  where tsm = tselected × (1 − mill tolerance)
