Condensate accumulated in the steam lines can get pushed by high velocity steam resulting in slug creating kind of water hammer at changes in direction. The presence of air in steam can greatly reduce its heat transfer efficiency due to air having good insulating properties. The main function of the steam trap is the removal of condensate, air and CO₂ out of the system as quickly as they accumulate.
