Stainers are manufactured using either perforated screen or mesh screen. Perforated screen are manufactured by punching a number of holes in a flat sheet and are used for filtering relatively coarse material. Mesh screens are manufactured by forming fine wire into a grid arrangement. Peforated screens are normally used to support the mesh screens. A strainers mesh size indicates the number of openings in one square inch of the screen. If there are 80 openings in both horizontal and vertical in one square inch of screen area, then it is referred to as an 80-mesh screen. If there are 200 openings, then it is referred to as a 200-mesh and so forth. Therefore, a higher mesh number indicates larger number of openings in one square inch and thus smaller opening sizes i.e. particle sizes filtered are smaller.
