Bonnet extensions are required in valves when they handle high or low temperature service which can affect the integrity of the stem seals. The extended bonnet serves to isolate the gland packing from the high or low temperature zone thus helping in maintaining the integrity of the stem seal and the operation of the valve. In some instances extension may be required to position the gland outside the insulation.
